A possible change to cab fares at the Saskatoon Airport was discussed at City Council today (Wed). It was recommended that the City Solicitor prepare an amendment to a bylaw to permit the Saskatoon Airport Commercial Curb Fee to be added to taxi fare, as opposed to having the drivers have to pay for it themselves with each airport fare. The airport’s curb fee is $2 per trip.
In its report to the Transportation Committee recently, Administration explained that this helps to reduce the operating cost of providing airport-related taxi service, and it would then be consistent with other additional costs, such as debit card transaction fees. Council also voted that Administration report back on also possibly including the 60-cent licensing fee and the 40-cent administration fee, which if approved, would mean a second amendment to the bylaw.
Saskatoon City Council also approved the recommendation that a dedicated location for scattering ashes along the riverbank be considered in the 2024/25 budget deliberations. In a report to the Planning, Development and Community Services Committee earlier this month Administration said a possible means of funding could include stakeholder fundraising and federal grant opportunities. In addition, they indicated the request to scatter ashes in the river came from the Sikh and Hindu Societies of Saskatchewan, and there was also a request for a possible dedicated location for the ceremony.
The City created guidelines for those who want to scatter ashes in the river in the summer of 2021. Administration suggested a location south of Meewasin Park which is close to Meewasin Trail, has parking, is near restroom facilities, but at the same time is away from traffic and nearby noise. The site would be open to anyone who wishes to use it and would include a designated, landscaped space.
