“No police officer wakes up, puts on the uniform and wants to be faced with the most difficult decision that we will ever have to make as a police officer.” That from Prince Albert Police Chief Jonathan Bergen after an officer-involved shooting on Monday night in the 400 block of South Industrial Drive.
A news release from the Police Service says there was a confrontation with a male and a firearm was discharged. The male was taken to hospital and was later pronounced dead. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has taken over the investigation into the shooting.
A statement from Bergen says, “We recognize there will be many questions, and a family and a community are in mourning. At this time, we will not be able to discuss details related to the independent investigation.”
When this happened, a relief shift was brought in to manage front-line calls for service overnight. Members are receiving support, including from the in-house wellness team, the Chaplain and Elders. Bergen says an officer-involved shooting is an extremely tragic and traumatic event.
