The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association’s volunteers have groomed over 11,000 kilometres of trail which are also maintained by the Association’s 53 clubs. President Leah Switzer advises riders to be respectful of the property you are on and if you don’t know, don’t go, because you need permission from the landowner, or it is considered trespassing. You don’t need permission to use the already groomed trails, though.
For Snowmobile Safety Week, the SSA is highlighting the rules of the road for riders, or the rules of the trail. She says every snowmobile needs to be registered. The $110 registration fee gives you $200,000 worth of third-party liability insurance.
As well, all those driving a snowmobile must have a driver’s license, and anyone born after January 1st, 1989, needs to take a snowmobile safety course. Switzer’s advice is to ride within your own capabilities at safe and appropriate speeds for the terrain and never ride while impaired.
Also, wear a helmet and adequate clothing, stay within designated riding areas, and always ride with another person, never alone. Click here for information on safety courses and to check out the trails.
