A social media post from the Saskatchewan RCMP says, “Don’t drive like a turkey. Give thanks and be safe this long weekend.” If you have been on the highway, you may have noticed more of a police presence with Operation Impact which began on Friday and continues through Monday, with police on the roads and highways conducting traffic stops, focusing on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.
In one instance, Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan says a vehicle in the Regina area on Sunday was clocked at 89 km/h in a 50 zone and was gifted a $562 ticket and 4 demerit points. Operation Impact is a national public awareness campaign to promote safe driving behaviour.
SGI’s Traffic Safety Spotlight this month is on speeding, and police across the province have been on the roads making sure travelers are safe over the long weekend. Speaking of which, in the unsafe driving category, Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan posted on Twitter a vehicle going double the speed limit at 100 km/h, which means a $798 fine, 4 demerit points, and a mandatory screening breath test. The CTSS says there was no alcohol in the driver’s system, and the reason given for speeding was they were late for dinner.
