Twenty-seven year old Sydney Daniels, who is a citizen of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak on Treaty 6 Territory has joined the Winnipeg Jets as a scout. Tribal Chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, Mark Arcand, introduced her by Zoom to the media this morning (Mon). He says her Saskatchewan community is really proud to see one of their First Nations women with her credibility and passion for the game.
Daniels says she is only a week into the job and when travelling for her first scouting trip she realized she was pretty nervous, thinking that NHL hockey is a different game from women’s hockey and college hockey. However, once she started watching the game, she realized hockey is hockey, and she began to get more comfortable.
Daniels says she grew up near Boston and went to College there, but there were many visits to family in Saskatchewan. She played for the NCAA’s Harvard Crimson women’s hockey team and then played a year of pro hockey for the Boston Pride before returning to Harvard to coach women’s hockey. Her father is former NHL’er Scott Daniels.
