Emma Hinz received the $4,000 scholarship to help pay for tuition when she attends the University of Saskatchewan this fall to persue a degree in Agriculture and Animal BioScience.

Hinz spoke about life on the family farm, about 8 kilometres southwest of Muenster, in her prize winning essay.

Hinz has a personal interest in food production and technology. The youngest of four daughters, Emma has been a type one diabetic for over fifteen years and was diagnosed as celiac twelve years ago.

Her personal experiences have made her an advocate for a better understanding of modern food production, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs). She hopes to use her story to help people understand the truth behind science and farming.

Three students received runner-up scholarships valued at $2,000: Laura Carruthers of Frenchman Butte, Kati Culbertson of Redvers and Crystal Daniel of Avonlea.

The Agriculture Student Scholarship Program identifies young people who are advocates for agriculture and can tell the story of Saskatchewan agriculture.

“The future of our industry relies on dedicated, inspiring young individuals,” said Lyle Stewart, Saskatchewan agriculture minister.

Applicants were required to write a 1,000 word science based essay or produce a three minute video about their personal food story.
