It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Shivers and McCallum reunited in Canadian Football Hall of Fame. My reaction…The better question is when are the Saskatchewan Roughriders going to get off their high horses and unite McCallum and Shivers in the Plaza of Honour? Long overdue for both!
Second headline…Fajardo’s success doesn’t surprise Shivers. Reaction…what can’t be denied is that Corn Dog Cody wins games, somehow, someway! The Green and White are 23-8 in games in which Fajardo starts. Yet, I still wonder which version of Fajardo is the real one…the quarterback we have seen so far this season and all of 2021 or the brilliant performer from 2019? The jury is still out!
Next headline…Matthews nails top regular-season prize, But Maple Leafs’ Hart Trophy winner would rather be playing for Stanley Cup. Reaction…no poop Sherlock! As for the whiners out of Edmonton and all Oilers’ fans who think their guy McSaviour was robbed, I can’t say I disagree when it comes to the M-V-P. Don’t forget the award is based solely on regular-season, playoffs don’t figure in as the voting is done before the post-season begins. Plus, Matthews won the Ted Lindsay Trophy as best N-H-L player…as voted on by the players themselves. Hmm…peers think Matthews was better than McDavid?! Chew on that for a few months!
Last headline…Bolts’ Paul will net big payday. My reaction…Playoffs really counts for players when they play and contribute for a team that goes deep into a post-season just a short time before being eligible for unrestricted free agency! Like Nick Paul!! Who?! Well, he showed up big time for Canada at last year’s World Championship in Riga, Latvia and has scored many big goals for Tampa Bay, despite being no better than a third line guy. But, he’s good on the power play and a responsible defensive centre…so he’s due that big payday! Let that be a lesson for anyone else…play your best when it matters most and you’ll be rewarded handsomely!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…..
