For a brief time, flags on federal buildings will be flying at full-mast this morning.
It’s the first time that has been seen since the end of May after the unmarked graves were found near a Residential School site at Kelowna.
The flags were raised at sunset last night so they could be lowered again at sunrise today for Indigenous Veterans Day.
Ottawa announced the decision on Friday about raising the flags after speaking with Indigenous groups.
The flags will be raised only to be lowered again on Remembrance Day but after Thursday they will once again be raised although they will be brought to half mast every year on September 30th for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
It is Indigenous Veterans Day and the newly elected Métis National Council (MNC), President Cassidy Caron, with dignitaries from First Nations and Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MNS) will gather at Batoche to honour and recognize Indigenous veterans. The event is closed to the public.
