The City of Saskatoon says HELP is on the way. HELP is the Home Energy Loan Program which launched today (September 1st), where owners of single-family homes can get a loan for energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy installations that are repayable through their property taxes.
Director of Sustainability, Jeanna South, explains that they are low interest loans available in terms of 5 to 20 years, but there is no fee for paying them off early. A few examples of what the loan could be used for are replacing your windows, doors or furnace with something more energy efficient, adding insulation to basements, attics and walls, or installing solar panels.
South says this program helps homeowners reduce energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the home’s comfort. It may also remove some barriers to getting a loan. This is expected to be a two-year program with funding for about 100 applicants, and then a report will go to City Council to see if the program can be expanded.
