Northern Nutrients a Saskatoon based company has announced the construction of a new sulphur enhanced urea fertilizer manufacturing facility that will begin construction, outside of Saskatoon, next month. Completion is expected by early 2022.
The facility will utilize the Shell Thiogro technology, for the incorporation of micronized elemental sulphur into Urea, resulting in a sulphur form that is available to plants across the growing season. For three years Northern Nutrients has been importing the patented Shell sulphur urea into North America, for distribution to retailers in Western Canada.
Ross Guenther, president and co-owner says the adoption of the products by producers and the anticipated increasing demand convinced them to produce their own form of the sulpur-enhanced urea in Canada. Guenther says they realized for product security and to serve the market, the next step was to offer local production of the product, rather than importing it from half way around the world. He explains the facility will manufacture 56,000 metric tons of product each year and will create more than thirty full time jobs.
Guenther is co-owner with Matt and Rob Owens of Emerge Ag Solutions, all reside in Saskatchewan. Matt Owens says all of their growers who have tried the sulphur product have increased their acres and moved all of their sulphur requirements over to the Shell micronized sulphur urea product.
Northern Nutrients is a crop nutrition company with origins from Amsterdam, Netherlands that has been involved in low salt and sustainable fertilizer manufacturing and distribution since 2016.
