Partial fences could be installed around storm ponds in the city’s Dundonald and Lakeview neighbourhoods in the near future.
The Committee on Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services has voted in favour of having partial fencing be installed in Dundonald Park and in Lakeview Park.
Other recommendations include planning for storm retention pond safety in new communities which includes location and size and revising signage for increased clarity for younger children and people with language barriers and continuing to distribute flyers to homes near the ponds to remind those in the area about safety risks and prohibited activities relating to the storm retention pond. Last fall five year old, Ahmedsadiq Elmmi drowned in the pond located in Dundonald Park. The school board said the boy could not be found at recess and staff called 911. Elmmi was then found at the pond and was sent to hospital. Last month Elmmi’s family filled a lawsuit against the city and the public school board over Elmmi’s death.
More recommendations include:
– Assessing maintenance options for cattails
– Collaborating with school divisions to educate students on pond safety
– Gather professional advice to apply to the city’s review with current policies for ice testing.
– Ensuring the nearby walkway lights are properly working
– Continue to install temporary fencing during pond maintenance
– Continue current standards for edging and vegetation
– In new neighbourhoods, incorporate streets and distance as barriers between schools and ponds
City Council will vote on the proposed recommendations at an upcoming council meeting.
