Coast-to-coast, communication operators with police services have been acknowledged for their efforts as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week. Office Manager of the Prince Albert Police Service, Josie Hemsworth says their operators take calls from the public and are also dispatchers who work closely with partners such as EMS and Sask911. She adds busy times include weekends and the warmer months throughout the summer in which they add another operator to the two regular on-duty operators. “It’s different everyday, you don’t really know what you’re coming into.” says Hemsworth. The Office Manager also says within a 12 hour period the operators may receive over 100 calls for service. Police organizations across Canada took part in the event by giving gifts to their operators, such as baked goods and cake. Both the Saskatchewan Government and the City of Prince Albert acknowledged National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week which started on April 8th and wraps up Saturday April 14th.
