Humboldt Bronco Logan Boulet, who died after the crash on Friday night, had signed his organ donor card after he turned 21 and that decision will save many lives. The Director of Hospital and Specialized Services with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Luke Jackiw, says there has been an overwhelming response from people interested in registering to become an organ donor. He advises that it’s as simple as putting your orange donor sticker on your health card but the most important thing you can do is talk to your family so they know what your wishes are. Across Canada, there is no organ donation without a family’s consent. Jackiw says Logan donated 6 organs but the awareness of his story has meant more people thinking about donation, which means he could end up helping hundreds if not thousands of people. Right now Saskatchewan has the lowest number of organ donations per population, but Jackiw says they are working on that.
A donation physician will be introduced who will then be the one with the expertise to have that difficult conversation when needed with a family. Jackiw believes the more awareness there is about organ donation, the higher the rates will be.
