Farm Credit Canada economists have been crunching numbers to determine the impact rising diesel prices are have on the farm. The numbers are not good now—but it will very likely become even more pronounced in the coming months.
FCC Senior Economist Graeme Crosbie said they started with the $1.18 per litre contained in the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture 2026 Crop Planning Guide release in January. That was compared to a price increase of 80 percent to $2.13 a litre. Those prices were then applied to canola margins in all three soil zones to see how the diesel cost per acre was impacted. Crosbie says the result is an increase of $14 to $21 an acre.
