This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. First off I have to say how disgusted I am by whoever is using Private Shaun Farrell’s death to fraudulently raise money through gofundme. If you missed it in the news, the family of the young soldier from Prince Albert who died in the fire at CFB Wainwright has taken to social media telling folks the only legitimate fundraise is through Heloise Vermeulen. The first poppy for the annual Poppy Campaign will be pinned this morning, and the campaign officially starts tomorrow. Protocol is you wear the poppy on you left by your heart, it has a black centre, and you wear it until November 11th. Inspired by the poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, In Flanders Fields, the Poppy recognizes those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy. Donations go to the Legion Poppy fund which provides a multitude of supports like grants for food heating costs, prescription medication, home repairs, emergency shelter – all for veterans – it’s quite a list actually. Keep in mind tomorrow when you are out and about in cities and towns across the province you will see cadets with poppies and donation tins. Be generous. Not just for the cause but because of the course the weather is turning nasty and many of them could very well be standing outdoors tomorrow. When I say generous – you know if you aren’t in financial straits, maybe ditch the dimes, quarters, nickels. Just sayin’. Of course, the campaign culminates on November 11th and in Saskatoon there will be the Remembrance Day service at SaskTel Centre long touted as the indoor service with some of the highest turnout in Canada. So, get a poppy, check out a service and maybe head to your local legion on Remembrance Day
