Octobers Traffic Safety Spotlight is on avoiding wildlife collisions.
October was picked since fall tends to be mating season for animals, meaning an increase in wildlife activity around roads.
Regan Tate, Manager of Media Relations for SGI, says highways and rural roads are where wildlife collisions happen typically.
“Each year we see about 8,800 wildlife related collisions on Saskatchewan roads, now that is based on a five-year average, and those collisions typically result in 400 injuries and two fatality’s every year.”
Tate adds that urban centres, such as the Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Yorkton areas have seen an increased amount of wildlife.
SGI says people can help to prevent a wildlife collision by being alert, paying attention to their speed, and watching out for signs of a wildlife area.
