The main event Tuesday at SaskTel Centre was the Western Hockey League’s version of a cage match.
In the end, the Prince Albert Raiders got up off the mat and were able to exit with a 6-5 pre-season victory over the Saskatoon Blades. The game was billed as a “rookie” contest, but even with 90 per cent of the players being only 15 or 16 years old, the Blades-Raiders rivalry was definitely there. P-A never led until Alex Boldt broke a 5-5 tie with 37 seconds remaining in the third period. That came 32 seconds after Athens Shingoose knotted the score on a power play and Raiders’ goaltender Evan Wandler on the bench for an extra attacker. Caleb Mozell tallied twice for Prince Albert with Louis Judd and John O’Shea adding single tallies. Boldt and O’Shea also chipped in an assist to join Mozell with multi-point games. Teagan Dernisky, the Bridge City Bunch’s first round pick in the 2026 W-H-L Prospects Draft, scored the game’s first two goals. Wesley Truax, Landon Medin and Alexander Sharman also lit the red light for the Blue and Gold. Truax added two assists for a three-point game. Christian Lee had three helpers, Hayden Harvey contributed two assists and Medin had an assist to go along with his goal for Saskatoon, who were out-shot 41-34. The teams did play 1:47 of three-on-three overtime, utilizing the W-H-L’s experimental no reset rule. That rule calls for the team to not voluntarily exit the offensive zone in possession of the puck after they bring it in. Should that happen, play will be stopped and a faceoff will be taken in the opposite end of the ice. The rule could come into use for the regular-season. By the way, the Blades’ Gavin Andersen scored in the overtime to end the game, but it didn’t count towards the final score. Moving forward, both Saskatoon and Prince Albert will both be in action on Friday. The Blades visit Swift Current on Friday while the Raiders are home to Moose Jaw.
