Saskatchewan NDP criticizes effort to hire new officers for Marshal Service

The NDP Associate Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Hugh Gordon, says of the 27 Marshals hired-to-date, only two are new officers. The remainder come from the RCMP or municipal police forces.

Gordon says the Chief Marshal promised there would be 50 officers in place by the end of 2025. He calls it a case of “putting the cart ahead of the horse.”

The provincial NDP believes Saskatchewan should follow Manitoba’s example. It is spending $8 million to assist with the recruitment of new RCMP officers in that province.

“It’s honestly embarrassing and a wasteful burden for Saskatchewan taxpayers,” said Gordon. “We see other provinces making real strides towards making their communities safer, while our government can’t even hit their own hiring targets from last year.”
