The provincial opposition is calling on the government of Saskatchewan to provide farmers with the certainty they need in a career that is so unpredictable.

The NDP shared their concerns for producers’ bottom lines at Ag in Motion on Thursday. Deputy Agriculture Critic Trent Wotherspoon says a recent report from the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan highlights that, as the price of goods at the grocery store continues to climb, local producers aren’t seeing any extra cash.

“People are paying more than ever on their groceries, but it’s not Saskatchewan producers who are benefiting from that. They’re actually losing their share of those dollars and have an enormous pressure on them. At the same time as they’re facing really soaring inputs costs by way of gasoline and fertilizer and such as well.”

He says the NDP has laid out a set of calls to action for the province, the federal government, and the competition bureau, including bolstering competitiveness amongst grocery stores, improve business risk management programs, cost-share premiums on livestock insurance, address producer rail transportation fees, and end the AI-pricing happening at grocery stores.
