Saskatchewan has seen an increase in wild and stray animal bite numbers, leading the SHA to remind people to stay away from those animals.

The SHA warns that wild or stray animal bite can transmit infections, such as rabies. Stray dogs, foxes, and bats are just a few of the animals that have tested positive for rabies in the past. It’s advised people to avoid all wild animals in case rabies is present without people knowing.

SHA medical health officer Dr. Simon Kapaj explained that children and those who are sleeping, intoxicated, or medicated when bitten are most encouraged to get an assesment.

“Not everybody who has had an encounter with a bat will be at high risk, because we do a risk assessment and then decide whether a rabies shot is required.”

People with wild and stray animal bites are advised to head to their family doctor, local ER, or call 811.
