The Saskatchewan NDP says malfunctioning elevators at Royal University Hospital are putting patients at risk.
Opposition Caucus Chair Matt Love says a leaked Saskatchewan Health Authority memo states that the RUH freight elevator is down for repairs for an undetermined amount of time. The freight elevator is used when patients need to be transported alongside large medical equipment, such as ventilators.
Love says when this elevator is down, patients are disconnected from their equipment and are forced to use the standard elevators.
“Health care workers have said that a critically ill patient was recently trapped in a malfunctioning elevator for nearly 15 minutes at RUH. The only reason they were in this elevator, is that the freight elevator was out of service.”
Now, Love is calling on the Province to disclose the extent of elevator outages at Royal University Hospital, provide a timeline for repairs, and release a plan to ensure critically ill patients can be transported safely throughout the facility.
The NDP also states that recent photos have emerged of mold growing on the windows in RUH’s Intensive Care Unit.
