If hitting posts and crossbars counted as goals, the Saskatoon Blades might’ve won Game 3 of their best-of-seven W-H-L Eastern Conference semi-final series with the Prince Albert Raiders.
However, as the saying goes, close only counts in horseshoes, meaning P-A found the range while the Bridge City Bunch didn’t in a 4-0 Raiders’ victory Tuesday night. The result means Prince Albert is up 3-0, with a chance to complete a sweep on Wednesday at SaskTel Centre. Rookie Czech goaltender Michal Orsulak recorded his second straight shutout and third of the post-season, stopping 23 shots. That was the most he has faced in the series thus far from the Blue and Gold, who had at least three shots hit iron behind Orsulak – including a second period power play attempt by David Lewandowski that hit both posts and the crossbar, but stayed out of the net, prompting Orsulak to kiss one of the posts shortly afterward. The Raiders opened the scoring just 3:19 into the first period when Brandon Gorzynski received an inadvertent deflection off an officials’ skate and put the puck past a startled Evan Gardner for what turned out to be the winning goal. P-A has opened the scoring in all eight of their post-season games so far this season. Braeden Cootes extended the lead with a pair of second period tallies and Evan Smith scored into an empty net in the game’s final minute in front of 6,522 fans. Despite the loss, it was the Blades’ best effort of the three games played in the series so far. However, the numbers are daunting as Saskatoon has been out-scored 13-1, out-shot 120-55 and the Bridge City Bunch are goal-less in 129:08 heading into Game 4. The Blue and Gold will face elimination for the second time in this playoff year when they host the Raiders at 7 o’clock Wednesday with CJWW’s broadcast starting at 6:45.
