This isVanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. Do you think it was intentional when former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced the alcohol escalator tax in 2017 that it fell on April Fool’s Day? Cause frankly it feels deliberate. I mean before this new tax if there were to be additional sin taxes then they came out with the budget. And the tax, according to information passed along by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, has cost us taxpayers, since its inception $1.6 billion. Speaking of taxes, Some experts within the food industry like Sylvain Charlebois at Dalhousie University suggests the recent decision by the Manitoba government to take the taxes off all food including prepared deli items wouldn’t save taxpayers much money but could hurt the restaurant industry. Yeah I don’t know about that. As much as it costs to eat out these days, a few bucks off in tax likely won’t propel someone who already can’t afford to actually order from a restaurant or eat at one to suddenly decide that it would work for them. Even if it was just seen as a good will gesture in Saskatchewan to do away with food tax, it would make me feel better when I’m ringing in the groceries. Back to the CTF, I agree, this automatic pay raise for politicians and the the governor general is revolting. Absolutely revolting. I wish people put more energy into demanding a binding referendum on that topic compared to some of the other ideas that are being floated.
