The provincial government’s 2026-27 budget was approved 33-18 Thursday in the Legislature.
For another year, the NDP attempted to amend the budgetary motion, this time to say the budget fails to invest in Saskatchewan residents and that the assembly has lost confidence in the government. This was voted down; also 33-18.
In his speech leading up to the vote, Premier Scott Moe stated that his Party’s budget is the best in Canada, and one that addresses global concerns by protecting education, healthcare, community safety, the economy, and affordability.
“This budget is very much, very much indicative of where Saskatchewan people are today. Taking care of ourselves, controlling what we can control, and ensuring that our great province and every community within it is going to be better tomorrow than it is today. I would just ask that God bless this great province and all of the residents in it.”
Moe also added that he’s also proud to serve alongside members on both sides of the house.
However, members opposite him didn’t seem to share that pleasure. NDP Leader Carla Beck said the budget, delivered under the title ‘Protecting Saskatchewan’, does nothing of the sort.
“‘Protecting families by reducing taxes.’ Let’s just talk about power bills. Let’s talk about increases to insurance. Let’s talk about their inability to reduce cost for families whether that’s…taking the PST off of groceries, off of kids clothing, temporarily suspending the gas tax. Anything.”
This year’s budget includes $21.42 billion in revenue and just over $22.2 billion in expenses, resulting in a deficit of $819.4 million. This year’s spending also brings Saskatchewan’s total debt up to $38.33 billion.
