See something suspicious in the meat aisle? Say something. Now there is a phrase I didn’t think I’d ever hear. It’s actually from a news release issued by Richmond, B.C. RCMP who say there have been 39 incidents of meat theft from retail locations in the area. As well the RCMP there believe, the pattern and volume of thefts suggest potential organized activity, where police believe product may be stolen for resale. So, several things come to mind including the ingenuity of someone who decided meat was the product their criminal enterprise could capitalize on. I’m not suggesting its praiseworthy, but someone is definitely thinking outside the box. But the bigger notable is that this strikes me as being a symptom, a real indicator of just how hard it is for some people in this country to get by that there is now a black market for items from the meat isle in the local grocery store. Police have a couple good points – the one that I would find most concerning is that if you buy this from Vinny in a dark alley you don’t know whether it was kept in an appropriate environment and you are risking getting seriously sick. And here in Saskatoon we figured one of our biggest threats is bear spray. Not possible food poisoning.
