The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been notified by RCMP of a death that occurred involving Onion Lake RCMP when they responded to a report of a man, armed with a firearm, holding a woman against her will at a home on a rural property within Onion Lake Cree Nation.
The RCMP say call came in at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday and their Critical Incident Response Team responded immediately to contain the residence at which time the woman was able to leave.
RCMP crisis negotiators communicated with the man and asked him to exit but eventually made entry to the home at 3:20 p.m. that afternoon. The man was found inside with injuries and was pronounced deceased by EMS on the scene.
Three firearms were recovered from the home and there is no indication that RCMP officers discharged their weapons.
As required by The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). SIRT will investigate the circumstances of the in-custody death.
