This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. I was exiting off Circle Drive onto Taylor earlier this week when the vehicle in front of me suddenly halted and pulled further right on the right hand turn that we were both in the midst of making. I also halted. And initially wondered if they were experiencing a medical emergency. But then heard the sirens coming down Taylor from the east. Unfortunately the driver behind me either didn’t credit me with having a good reason to stop or was driving too fast to come to a standstill because he drove at a high rate of speed for the turn, around me, and into the path of the fire truck with emergency equipment activated. The firetruck, rightfully, hit the horn and thankfully no collision took place. My point is – could everyone just get back to following the rules of the road? When you hear sirens, pull to the right. Emergency responders are trained to drive with the expectation all other drivers pull to the right. When you’re at a four way stop, first person there, proceeds. If two of you arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right always has the right of way. No, I don’t stop for jaywalkers, and I don’t stop to let cyclists, riding on their bikes in a crosswalk. And I hate it when I’m on a bike and cars stop. I am just another vehicle and I am following the rules of the road like everyone else which is how we avert traffic snarls, accidents, and confusion. Did you know that the Saskatchewan Safety Council delivers FREE Mature Driver Refresher Courses. It’s entirely voluntary. For some reason – not offered in Saskatoon – – but elsewhere in the province which is unfortunate cause I can think of some drivers who could benefit from brushing up on their skills.
Don’t make assumptions about other drivers, they could be the reason you also make good choices
