It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Long playoff window closes abruptly on the Maple Leafs. My reaction…In my humble opinion, the Leafs suffer from the same problems as the Edmonton Oilers do – lots of high-end, elite scoring potential, but mediocre or over-hyped talent on defence and in goal! That has kept Toronto from being able to utilize the yellowed and worn plans for a Stanley Cup celebration and parade! Hey, remember when the New York Rangers received mock chants – especially on Long Island and in New Jersey – because of their long Cup drought?! 19-40!! I’m surprised that no-one has picked that up in other centres now with Sixty-seven!! Coming soon to a rink near you – guaranteed!!
Next headline…European soccer clubs scoring with massive stadium rebuilds, As T-V revenue falls, teams lean on new venues or renovations for added income. Reaction…that is a European issue, not one in North America – although that doesn’t stop major pro sports teams from pushing cities to build them new homes! Just look at the fairly new Rogers Place in Edmonton and the soon-to-be completed Scotia Place in Calgary for the Oilers and Flames! But, T-V revenue isn’t an issue in North America – certainly not for the N-F-L. Heck, that league doesn’t need to sell a single ticket or a single bit of merchandise with which to pay their players with the television dollars they get. Meanwhile, Rogers is keeping the N-H-L and their teams flush with another new, long-term deal about to start!!
Last headline…IndyCar takes to Washington’s streets for U.S.’s 250th bash. My reaction…Well, there goes D-C’s noise by-law out the window. I’m glad I don’t live there! Having said that, considering who the current sitting President is and who and where his support comes from, I’d have thought a NASCAR event through the streets of Washington would’ve been more appropriate!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
