The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency’s spring runoff outlook says the majority of the province can anticipate near to below normal runoff this spring.

Well below normal conditions are expected in the southwest from Kindersley to Assiniboia. This includes the Leader, Maple Creek, Val Marie, Coronach, Swift Current, Lucky Lake and Elbow regions.

The below normal spring runoff area covers Lloydminster, North Battleford, Scott, Outlook and Regina.

Saskatoon is on the edge of the near normal runoff area. Also anticipating a near normal runoff are Meadow Lake, Spiritwood, Prince Albert, Nipawin, Melfort, Hudson Bay and Watrous regions.

There is a portion of east-central Saskatchewan in the above normal runoff category—Wynyard, Kamsack, Yorkton and Melville.

The northern half of the province including La Ronge, Buffalo Narrows and Key Lake is looking at a below normal runoff.

Lake Diefenbaker is slightly above its normal operating level for this time of year. Other major reservoirs are at or above normal levels with the exception of the McDougald and Harris reservoirs in the southwest.

The Water Security Agency will monitor spring conditions as they develop with an eye on southern Alberta’s snowpack. As of late February, the snowpack in the Alberta prairie portion of the basin ranges from below normal to near normal.
