This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. According to Stand Against Scams Campaign recent estimates measure daily scam attempts in Canada – in the billions. This is Fraud Prevention Month and one of those scams doing the rounds again is the Grandparent’s Scam. I actually had those jokers call me – I picked up the phone and said Hello only to have the voice on the other end say “Grandma?” Being as I’m not only hyper aware because of my job, I also don’t have grandchildren. Instead of some clever response my first reaction was to start laughing. I told him nice try and hung up. However, you may have heard about the woman in eastern Canada who recently got taken in. She seemed pretty on the ball but still succumbed to this form of fraud. And she did say that the voice on the other end of the phone sounded like her grandchild. A co-worker in the last week, had their parent experience something similar. Her dad got a call and would have sworn it was his grandson’s voice. Frankly in these times of artificial intelligence highly possible. Thankfully he called her sister to double check and sure enough it wasn’t his grandson. Frankly in these times of artificial intelligence highly possible. One of the other things fraudsters are doing as well is telling people not to tell their bank – well absolutely should tell your bank if things seem hinky they will bring it to your attention, and they don’t want you to be defrauded any more than anyone else does. Ultimately be very, very alert and take every precaution.
Fraudsters will stop at nothing to take your money
