Work is being done on the concrete overpass at Circle Drive and Highways 11 and 16 after it was significantly damaged by a semi hauling an excavator that was too large to fit under the bridge.
Dan Willems, Director of Technical Services for the City of Saskatoon had some choice words for the drive who caused the damage, as they did not possess a permit.
“Maybe don’t be a block head and measure your load before you try and move. And get a permit They’re lucky nobody was killed. It’s ridiculous.”
He adds that the city can now levy fines against the driver and their company.
“There were some changes made to the city’s traffic bylaw last year that now makes it an offence to damage city property with a motor vehicle. This allows us to seek fines and restitution, so cost recovery for the damage, directly through the provincial court instead of having to go through civil litigation. I also gives us the right to levy fines of up to $10,000 to the driver and $25,000 to the company.”
Only one lane, the north most eastbound lane on the bridge will remain open until construction is complete.
The Saskatoon Police Service is investigating the incident to decide if charges are warranted.
