The Official Opposition continues to call on the Provincial Government to put an end to the layoffs at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
During Question Period on Wednesday, Opposition critic Tajinder Grewal asked Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff to commit to preventing any more layoffs at the institution, as the total of laid-off employees has now reached 151 over the course of both 2025 and 2026.
In response, Cheveldayoff claimed that the underfunding situation was started by the federal government, and Saskatchewan institutions are not the only ones facing challenges.
“He tries to claim that the layoffs are only due to the federal government’s cap on international students. Our post-secondary institutions should not be dependent on the international student revenue in the first place.”
In most recent lay-off news, Sask. Polytech eliminated 23 additional full-time and part-time jobs and is also suspending its health information management program for the 2026-27 school year.
