This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. Social media continues to display the absolute worst in human beings and the best. The admins for a Facebook group I follow posted last night that it was implementing more member rules and then had to outline what behaviors are not allowed in the group, after someone made a post and then became the target of sexual harassment and stalking. Apparently, it was overt and made the victim definitely feel threatened. I’ve tried to limit who can see anything on my Facebook page, but anyone can send you messages by Messenger. I know I’ve blocked a few people over the years. I can’t imagine how awful the target of that harassment felt. It’s uninvited and well beyond worrisome. I mentioned trolling before – you see it all the time in group pages. I’ve learned to skip past it and not let it bother me, that someone has so much time on their hands they will provide unsolicited input that becomes personal for no reason other than to be that – a troll. On the other hand, I saw couple posts this week where for instance someone’s vehicle was stuck in the snow and a stranger stopped to help dig them out. Or a woman who was having a very hard day, sitting in a coffee shop parking lot crying and a stranger stopped and typed out on their phone – Are you ok? She said it did wonders for her heart at a very trying time. So, we can be better, obviously. I wish more people could operate on the premise that respectful discourse be it on social media or in person, elevates everyone to a better place.
Hate is hard to banish from your mind but at the same time a little kindness goes a long way
