It’s my Parting Shot for my Monday Musings…..
If you haven’t figured out professional sports by now, last night’s 60th edition of the Super Bowl clearly spelled it out – defence wins championships!!
The Seattle Seahawks won the N-F-L title by choking off New England’s offence for three quarters, then giving their faithful a couple of touchdowns to cheer about in the fourth quarter, well after the result was assured! Six quarterback sacks, three turnovers – one of which was a pick six! All my wife could say was, the New England quarterback looks to be too young to play in a big game like this – she’s pretty much right in this instance!!
Like many people I know, Bad Bunny’s music is not my jam and I didn’t understand a word of his half-time entertainment, but I was appreciative of the shout-out to Canada, the parade of flags from throughout the Americas – not just America, a-k-a the United States, the wedding and the message at the end. The only thing more powerful than hate is love. I know of at least two world leaders, likely several more, but the two big ones who could help themselves out by adhering to that message!!
Somewhat lost in the “Super Bowl Shuffle” is the Winter Olympics. Already The Fearless Predictor’s thought that Canada’s Mixed Doubles curling team would win a silver medal is kaput! After winning their first three games, the husband and wife duo of Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant lost five straight games and missed the playoff round! Hopefully, that’s not an omen for Canada’s four-person pebbled ice squads!
I also hope that only scoring four goals on 55 shots in an opening victory over Switzerland isn’t an omen of what’s to come for Canada’s women’s hockey team in Milan! Inability to score will bite them against the better teams that they have yet to play!!
Lastly, a big thank you and well done to Darren Zary on his last day as a sports writer with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Yes, we still have a daily newspaper and Zary’s yarns were always worth a read! Back in the day, he was everywhere and had the pulse of the city and the province when it came to sports – more than just the scores! Don’t disappear D-Z, although enjoy your retirement and all the traveling you have lined up – I am envious!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
