An acquaintance of mine whose husband was in the Canadian Forces and trained on Multis – multi engined planes versus fighter jets or choppers – left the forces to become a pilot for WestJet. She didn’t like that – she wanted him to take a desk job because it paid more money. I remember her characterizing it as just a bus driver in the sky. Not to demean bus drivers but I think flying a plane probably take a tad more expertise. And give the guy a break – flying a plane is what he always wanted to do. Now I lost touch with them, so I was never sure how that worked out but I saw on X – formally twitter – footage a plane landing in challenging circumstances in Mississauga. It was a WestJet plane that flew in from Orlando and had circle several times before attempting a landing. I remember flying to Halifax years ago for a conference and we ended up in Hamilton because of weather and then took off – it had abated a bit in Halifax, and they thought they could make it. I remember the pilot saying when they got close to the airport, they might have to do a touch and go. Which frankly I’m not sure I needed to know ahead of time. the wind was the issue, and it was something because you could feel the plane sideways when it touched down. The folks on the Orland plane broke into claps and cheers and on the Halifax flight we did too. I don’t know if folks remember but it used to be standard to clap after landing. I think we should back to that. Oh, and hey if you hadn’t heard WestJet is going to pull out the extra seats in its planes to give customers room again.
