On Sunday Mattel Inc unveiled its first ever autistic Barbie doll.
The company says it was created with guidance from the autistic community. In a news release the company says their goal is to convey common ways autistic people “may experience, process and communicate about the world around them.”
The Global Head of Dolls at Mattel says every child deserves to see themselves in Barbie.
Some of this Barbie’s features include a body with elbow and wrist articulation as some members of the autistic community use hand flapping and other hand gestures to process sensory information or show their excitement.
The eye gaze is shifted slightly to the side reflecting how some people with autism may avoid direct eye contact. Some of the accessories include a fidget spinner, noise cancelling headphones and sensory sensitive fashions.
There are many versions of Barbie now available that include a range of skin tones, hair textures, body types, and various medical conditions and disabilities like type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome and blindness.
