The December 30th incident on the Big Island Cree Nation, about four hours northwest of Saskatoon, resulted in a dangerous persons alert being issues from 8:23am to 4:49pm on Tuesday, December 30th.

A 31-year-old man was killed but RCMP are not releasing any additional information about the victim. Three other people remain in hospital with serious—but non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP have not made any arrests and explained in a New Year’s Eve news release why the decision was made to lift the dangerous persons alert.

“Public safety decisions are never taken lightly. When we decided to cancel the dangerous persons alert, we considered several factors, including the amount of time that had passed since the shooting, that the incident was contained to one location, and that no additional victims were found. That alert has remained cancelled as there were no other incidents overnight,” says Inspector Ashley St. Germaine, senior investigative officer with Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch.

“In any investigation, we’re constantly evaluating the risk to public safety. As we moved through the day yesterday, we continually assessed the need to keep the dangerous persons alert active. We will continue to monitor the risk to public safety.”

Updates will be provided when available. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate. Saskatchewan RCMP remain on the Big Island Cree Nation. Extra patrols and security have been provided by the Saskatchewan Marshals Service and the Government of Saskatchewan’s Protection and Response Team.
