Highway 16 between North Battleford and Maidstone was closed for a period of time Monday following a serious collision.
Highway Hotline indicated that the corridor was extremely slippery, as well. RCMP report the collision was at Delmas. The investigation is ongoing.
Most of the highways across the province are reported as covered or partly covered this morning, however nearly all roads surrounding Regina were labeled as Travel Not Recommended due to ice as of Tuesday morning. They are now being listed as ‘covered’; however, icy conditions could still exist.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Brian Luzny says although temperatures are above seasonal averages, it won’t be warm enough to melt the ice of the roadways. In fact, the province might get even more freezing rain today.
“We do have a pop of light snow and a risk of freezing drizzle all day with that cloud, so you may see on-and-off light snow and freezing drizzle throughout the day.”
He adds that two quick moving systems from Alberta may drop 1-2 centimetres of snow both tonight and Wednesday night.
Normal highs for this time of year are -10, and normal lows are -20. Although we’re seeing some positive temperatures, no daytime high records have been broken yet, and it’s expected to cool off again over the course of the next 24 hours.
