RCMP officers had a busy Wednesday tending to the aftermath of poor driving conditions. 

RCMP Spokeswoman Keely Grasser says between midnight and 2:00 p.m., there have been 29 weather-related accidents. Although she couldn’t provide specifics, she did say that many of them involved semis and slippery inclines.  

 “A lot of the precipitation has fallen as freezing rain. I heard from one of our officers in Swift Current that the roads are so slippery that it’s hard to even stand on the roads, let alone drive.”

The RCMP are asking people to stay home if travel is not required, and if you must drive, do so slowly, and check the Highway Hotline before heading out.  

“We also remind the public that 911 is for emergencies only. It’s not to check road conditions, and it’s not to call and complain about a cancelled flight which is one of the calls that our OCC team received this morning.”

Dan Palmer with the Ministry of Highways says there is a buffet of highway conditions impacting the province right now, and they can change on a dime. If you have to hit the road, slow down, pack a safety kit, and give snow plows enough space.
