This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. I don’t travel in poor weather anymore. Or in the dark either, for the most part. I look back on my younger me who until about age 35 or so was willing to go hell bent for election, no matter the weather, if I had a place to go and people to see. I remember going to Yorkton one year for a celebration with my niece, so I drove to Moose Jaw first, picked up my Mom and drove to Yorkton. We had the get-together and then headed home in a wicked, wicked rainstorm. At one point the lightning was so close and so intense we could smell the sulfur in the air. I remember we were getting closer to Fort Qu’Appelle and all I wanted to do was pull over but the rain was coming down so hard, chances were anyone behind me could very well have plowed into me, because they couldn’t see me. Which is the same reasoning applied one trip from Rosetown – it was one of my first jobs there – and I was going home no matter what, but it was a full-on blizzard and I ended up storm stuck in Elbow staying with my best friend’s mother-in-law. Gotta love Saskatchewan hospitality when people just open their doors because someone needs help. I was supposed to go to a family funeral in Red Deer tomorrow. I have cancelled that plan in light of the impending weather. For one, I don’t need the stress of white knuckling it in driving conditions that will probably make a six-and-a-half hour drive a whole lot longer, and risk having an accident. While I really want to be there with my family, they understand and you know as much anything COVID-19 related generally leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth, it did create technology that will allow me to watch the funeral from here. So, if you have places to go and people to see this week, maybe they’d like to see you just as much another time without worrying about a loved one on the road. Be safe out there.
Is it worth driving in bad weather?
