The Saskatoon Police Service says around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 1500 block of 16th Street West.
Police say while the officers were trying to identify the driver, the vehicle attempted to flee but only made it a short distance before spinning out at the intersection of 17th Street West and Avenue E South.
Those inside fled on foot. Police searched the vehicle and say they located an imitation firearm, knife, and ammunition. Meanwhile a track by a Police Service Dog led officers to a suspect hiding under a barbeque cover in the back yard of a home in the 500 block of Avenue E South.
A 33-year-old man has been charged with two counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, possession of ammunition while prohibited, and failure to comply with court-ordered conditions.
Earlier on Sunday morning around 8:00 a.m. officers responded to a report of a vehicle having just been stolen from the 400 block of Labine Crescent in Saskatoon’s Kensington neighbourhood.
As officers were en route, police also received several reports of hit and runs involving a vehicle with a similar description to the one that was recently stolen. Officers located the vehicle driving in the area of 22nd Street West and Neault Road; however, when a traffic stop was attempted, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed.
Saskatoon Police disengaged from the evade police incident but a short time later, the vehicle was located by members of the Corman Park Police Service in a restaurant parking lot near 39th Street West and Idylwyld Drive North.
A suspect was arrested inside the restaurant. A 17-year-old-male has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, two counts of hit and run, evading police, theft of a vehicle, and obstruction.
