A report to be put before Saskatoon’s transit committee Tuesday indicates that negative interactions on city buses have been trending downward since June.

The report states that negative incidents, such as aggression, assault, and intoxication are also down 28 per cent year over year, although it’s important to note that the year isn’t over yet.

In 2024, there were 1081 negative interactions, and as of September 30th, 2025, there have been 792.

Also on the bright side, the number of interactions involving a transit operator slumped from 101 in 2023 to 90 in 2024 and is trending to be lower in 2025 with a current total of 63.

So far this year, the main types of negative interactions seen on transit have been acts of aggression at 27 incidents, and verbal altercations at 17.

Meanwhile committee members will also be presented with four options to enhance safety and security on City transport.

Option one consists of hiring ten Fire Community Support Officers between 2026 and 2027. This would cost $1,002,200 over two years.

Option two would secure six Fire Community Support over two years, costing $603,000.

Option 3 would see the hiring of one Sergeant and eight officers, as well as two additional patrol cars in 2026 at a cost of $1.6 million.

Finally, option 4 would see the same resources and cost, but they would be phased in over two years instead of one.

Unless directed otherwise, this report will be included in the upcoming Multi-Year Business Plan and Budget package where City Council will discuss the options and determine what they believe is best.
