Saskatoon Public Schools’ Brightwater Science & Environmental Centre will be overseeing a prescribed burn today. As part of the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) there will also be prescribed fire activities planned at Chief Whitecap Park, Cranberry Flats Conservation Area, Beaver Creek Conservation Area and NCC Asquith Conservation Area near Asquith.
The sites being burned today are managed by CPPFE partners Meewasin, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Saskatoon Public Schools. The sites will remain open excluding Brightwater Science and Environmental Centre.
The five-day live-fire training event hosted by the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange and the Meewasin Valley Authority, bringing together over 60 participants from across Canada and the United States.
There are several objectives around the prescribed burns including a demonstration for training purposes, reducing litter cover so planted native grasses can grow, enhance wildlife habitat, reduce risk of fire especially on trails, and reduce the cover of invasive plants.
