The Saskatoon Blades added on to the Brandon Wheat Kings’ start of the season woes, scoring the game’s first five goals Sunday, then coasting to a 6-3 victory in Western Manitoba.
The Bridge City Bunch improved to 4-2-0 for the season, winning both games on the third, two-game weekend of the campaign so far. The Wheaties, meanwhile, are 0-4-1 and have allowed 31 goals in five games. Former Wheat King centre Dominik Petr (pictured) was one of four members of the Blue and Gold to record multiple points, scoring twice and adding two assists. The four points is a career high for the 20-year-old from Czechia, who was acquired from Brandon in the off-season. Petr wasn’t the only one to have a career game, points-wise. German left winger David Lewandowski had a goal and four assists for five points while sophomore defenceman Jordan Martin recorded his first career multi-point game with a goal and two assists. Add in a fighting major late in the third period and the 18-year-old product of Abbotsford, B-C, is credited with a “Gordie Howe hat-trick”…a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game. In addition, right winger Hunter Laing scored the other two goals for the Blades, who out-shot Brandon 41-26. The game got a little spicy in the final two-and-a-half minutes as there were three separate scraps and the Wheaties were able to score a couple of power play goals to make the final result a little more respectable. Saskatoon returns to action Tuesday when they host the Vancouver Giants in their biennial visit to SaskTel Centre at 7 o’clock. CJWW’s broadcast begins at 6:45.
