I’m Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. You may have seen this circulating on Facebook – the Grocery Rebate? Do not click links, do not believe everything you see on social media. There is no new Grocery Rebate. If you check the Government of Canada website, it will list the latest scams going around and this is one of them. The messages circulating claim Canadian residents can apply for a new Grocery Rebate but in fact it was a one-time payment issued in July 2023. Again, do not click on any links or provide information to apply for any new Grocery Rebate. Meanwhile this week the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) sent out a warning about yet another impersonation scam which is claiming that Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are endorsing an online investment platform called AllRealGroup, also known as AllReal Investments Pty Ltd. The FCAA says scammers even go so far to create fake news articles to mimic legitimate media and try to get you to make an investment based on a notable figure endorsement. In Saskatchewan if a company isn’t registered with FCAA it cannot trade or sell securities or derivatives in the province. And no matter what we think of our politicians, it would be unethical to publicly endorse entities while in office. Yes, I know, why can’t these scammers use their abilities for good, not evil? Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.
