Ramage Land and Cattle Company Ltd. is facing charges following the death of a worker in August 2023.
The incident occurred near Walpole, Saskatchewan when a worker drowned as a result of entering a dugout on horseback.
Two weeks ago, the company pleaded guilty in Regina Provincial Court to failure to comply with the duties of an employer at a place of employment including the provision and maintenance of a plant resulting in the death of a worker.
The Court imposed a fine $17,857 along with a surcharge of $7,142 for a total amount of $25,000.
In addition, the company will be establishing a $4,500 scholarship through Canadian Western Agribition in honour of the deceased, and two educational articles will be published: one in the Western Producer detailing the case, the lesson learned, the steps taken and the resources available for the agricultural sector; and the other a legal article detailing the case, the charges and the resolution on the Law Society of Saskatchewan and Trial Lawyers Association websites.
