It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…The Big Question, Who’s better this C-F-L season – Mitchell or Harris? My reaction…We’re talking about the oldest starting quarterback in the league, in Saskatchewan’s Trevor Harris, and the third-oldest in Hamilton’s Bo Levi Mitchell – each one hard, awkward hit away from being injured! That’s something that can be said for all athletes who play football, but the older the quarterback – the more prone they are to injury – just a fact of life! The answer that veteran Post Media sports writer Darrell Davis came up with was Harris, based on the Green and White’s better record so far this season. For me, it’s Bo Levi as his career has been rejuvenated in Steel City and he has a dynamic receiving target in Kenny Lawler who has made a habit of torching the Riders in recent history. I’m probably in the minority with this answer, but we’ll see who is best at the end!
Next headline…Long, tough off-season finally ends for Rams, Heartbreaking loss followed by arrests in drug sweep hurt. Reaction…I know there are a lot of people in Saskatoon and area that are fans of the Saskatchewan Huskies that are smiling at the off-season misfortune that befell the Regina Rams, but if I’m all the folks involved with football, maybe all sports, not just in the Canada West Conference – but all of U Sports – I’d be concerned with the fact two members of the Rams were part of a five-person group arrested in connection with trafficking fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamines. Plus, weapons charges, vehicles impounded and six figures worth of cash seized! How many student-athletes are doing this as a way of getting them through their studies?! Seriously!!
Last headline…Mboko hailed as role model. My reaction…I hope Victoria Mboko stays healthy and stays focused on the sport, unlike two other recent Canadian female tennis role models in Eugenie Bouchard and Bianca Andresscu! Bouchard made it into the top five in the world, then turned to being a pin-up girl. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, she’s rich, but she’s not a role model for sticking with tennis and being proficient at it. As for Andresscu, she can’t seem to stay healthy and follow up on her initial success from a few years back. Stay focused and healthy, Vicky! Please!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
