Earthquakes Canada has confirmed there was an earthquake in the Esterhazy area on Friday.
It measured 3.3 on the Richter scale. Earthquakes Canada has indicated it is a suspected mining-induced event.
Some of the largest earthquakes recorded in the region date back to the 20th century with the largest recorded earthquake in 1909 measuring 5.5 in magnitude.
Potash mining has taken place near Esterhazy since 1961, and Mosaic describes their mining operation in the area as “the world’s largest potash operation.”
