After Health Canada contacted the U.S. manufacturer of the Glanzfeurer Tabletop Fire Pits and the company didn’t agree to a voluntary recall, Health Canada is now issuing a warning to people in Canada to stop using “these dangerous products.”
These tabletop fire pits require consumers to pour alcohol, including rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), into the bowl and then ignite the pooled alcohol in the same location it was poured.
Health Canada says isopropyl alcohol burns with flame temperatures over 1,600°F (871°C) and can cause third degree burns in less than one second. Igniting pooled alcohol in the affected products creates an uncontrollable pool fire, which can suddenly produce larger, hotter flames that can spread beyond the product.
They say flame jetting can occur when refilling fuel in Glanzfeurer Tabletop Fire Pit if any flame or hot surface is present. A flame in these affected products can be hard to see and the vapours inside the fuel container can ignite as it is poured into the fireplace. This can lead to flames violently shooting out of the fuel container or a dangerous explosion that propels flames and burning liquid onto the consumer or bystanders.
The product has been removed from sale online from the website Amazon.ca.
