City of Saskatoon Administration has provided the transportation committee with a report on the potential use of the parking pay stations to track offenders with unpaid parking tickets. The committee made the request last August and Administration suggests the concept is redundant.
The committee will meet and review the report Tuesday which outlines some of the challenges of using pay stations to track down those with unpaid parking tickets including that once you’ve paid for parking you can park any pay parking area in the city. As well those using the pay parking app to accommodate the ability for motorists to move to a different area during a paid parking session, the stations are programmed under one zone so anyone who pays on the app would be untrackable.
Currently 50 per cent of people using the paid parking stations use the app, 30 per cent pay with a credit card and 20 per cent use coins. Right now, all the Paid Parking Stations in Saskatoon are being replaced with newer models. The existing Pay Parking App will continue to be used even with the new stations in place which are touch screen.
Administration says the City of Saskatoon’s fleet of parking enforcement vehicles and parking enforcement officers can do automated scanning-based license plate recognition hardware so those with unpaid parking tickets are already being identified and the information is shared with the impoundment crew.
